Spreading God's Word

SINCE 1904

Groome United Methodist Church celebrated its 100th Anniversary in September 2004.

A congregation was organized in September 1904 with the Ladies’ Mite Society playing a major role in the Lewes station of the Methodist Protestant Church. In 1908 the group was incorporated under the name of Groome Memorial Methodist Protestant Church; Mrs. Ann Groome had deeded the lot of land to the venture in 1905. She died shortly thereafter and her family offered an adjoining lot the church in return for the adoption of the new name.

Our Beliefs

Groome United Methodist Church is a part of Christ’s representative body to all who live in the vicinity of Lewes. Representing the presence of God in the world, it is the point of access into the kingdom of God. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we gather weekly for worship, teaching the Word of God, administering the sacraments of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. It proclaims the prophetic word of God in the world and the Good News of salvation through Jesus Christ in hope that others will be received into the kingdom of God.

The primary focus of Groome Church is to attract people into the kingdom of God by helping them to receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, and show them how to lead a holy life and be in service to others. We believe the church must present the whole gospel, which is comprised of winning the lost to Christ (evangelism) and living out the Christian principles in the world (social action). This holistic gospel is a balanced outreach, which attempts to attract people without a church home to become disciples of Jesus Christ and then provides the environment through which they can develop to do the servant tasks Jesus taught. Evangelism and social action together offer a comprehensive gospel message that addresses both the spiritual and physical needs of humanity. At the time of reception into the Church, the members commit to faithfully participate in its ministries by their prayers, their presence, their gifts, their witness, and their service.

In order to accomplish its primary tasks in the present age, Groome Church is creative in communicating the gospel in an understandable way. This means using multi-media presentations, a broad range of music styles, art, and drama to reinforce clear evangelical expository preaching. Furthermore, the Groome church provides an atmosphere that is open to people of all ages, nations, and races, giving everyone the opportunity to find the kingdom of God and experience love and acceptance.
